FUNDRAISER TO SAVE LIVES

Port Coquitlam, BC: Most treatment for eating disorders is not covered by insurance. Bulimia is still seen as a choice made by young, wealthy girls who are vain. Yet, Anorexia has one of the highest mortality rates than any other mental illness. So why is there no funding for treatment?

Shelley’s Angels Society is asking just that question at this year’s annual “Until Your Heart’s Content” fundraising conference. Money raised from sponsorship, donations and the silent auction draw will be distributed in the form of bursaries to those who can’t afford treatment.

Full Bursaries are for $2,800.00 CDN and partial Bursaries are for $1,400.00 CDN with the counsellor or treatment centre of choice. Applicants apply by filling out a form and telling their story and bursaries are given out as often as funds are available. The society’s goal is to help finance as many individuals as they can.

“Until Your Heart's Content” Conference:

Who Should Attend

Families who need a community of hope and support, who want to learn skills to help their loved one recover and find support among others facing similar experiences. Professionals in the field who want to expand their skill set, learn from the foremost experts in the field, hear from families going through this experience and re-energize their practice.

Individuals in recovery who need helpful tools and sources of inspiration, as well as get tools and insight from the top professionals in the field.

Educators and advocates are invited to network, exchange ideas and find new tools to raise awareness and decrease the stigma associated with disordered eating.

General public who want to support someone they know with an eating disorder, who want to donate to this important cause and who want to find out what really happens while someone recovers.

Largest Eating Disorder Event in Canada

With the recent attention on pro-anorexia groups on MySpace and Facebook, model’s deaths, celebrities admitting to eating disorders and shrinking actresses in Hollywood, the below event couldn’t be better timed.

Until Your Heart’s Content will take place this October 11th at the Red Robinson Show Theatre in Coquitlam.

Canadian insurance covers a limited number of weeks of treatment for an eating disorder, but it takes years to fully recover.  Most individuals don’t get a chance to heal and end up relapsing again and again.

Films like Lauren Greenfield’s Thin, showcases the misery of eating disorders but not the hope.  Until Your Heart’s Content is the awareness event of the year, posed to become the largest eating disorder benefit in Canada.

The evening will include international and local speakers, as well as musicians and performers who have struggled themselves.  Renowned author and co-founder of the Anorexia & Bulimia Center of Hawaii, Anita Johnston, will be holding her celebrated “Soul Hunger” workshop on October 13th, as well as be the much anticipated keynote speaker of the evening.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Shelley’s Angels Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those without the financial means afford private counselling for an eating disorder.
